Case Study 01: On Mass
For 130 years a mighty oak tree had stood strong within my family's forest. The tree's trunk had grown two massive forked pillars. Fifteen years ago, one half of the trunk became so massive that it tore itself away from the other. With that fallen limb my family heated their house for an entire winter. At the start of 2019, we revisited the other half of the still standing tree. The oak looked tired as rot had begun to consume its branches and trunk from the inside out. We decided to take the tree down before it was consumed with rot, rendering its extraordinary lumber unfit for building with. We re-purposed it into beautiful furniture, and transplanted its seedlings to advantageous locations so it may live on through its offspring.

These pieces are a collaborative effort between ODAMI and ONE WOOD. They were inspired by the immense presence this mighty oak once possessed, and through the design process captured its essence through the idea of mass.
